Tove Lo’s New Singles Heighten the Anticipation for ‘ESTRUS’

In the lead-up to her new album ESTRUS, Swedish singer-songwriter Tove Lo’s third single “DNH” encapsulates her trademark balance between vulnerability and sensuality, backed by a heavy synth beat, strong trap drums and vocal repetition effects. 

Though it is the shortest single yet, at about two and a half minutes, “DNH” deals with two friends at odds with each other — a tension created by one friend’s behavior. 

Whereas most of Lo’s songs focus on romantic relationships or her relationship with herself, “DNH” explores the complexities of friendship and what happens when there are different goals for a night out. The lyrics “You’re drunk and horny in the crowd / You’re still my best friend when you ruin my night” highlight this dynamic. 

Paired with the other two singles — “des fleurs x stromae” and “I’m your girl right?” — Lo is setting the stage for her first LP after 2022’s Dirt Femme. By exploring themes of insecurity, friendship and love, the music is relatable to all listeners, and Tove Lo’s signature synth pop touch shows her consistent evolution as a leading artist in the Swedish pop scene.
