Remi Wolf is Back, and She's Singing About Emotional Unavailability (and Butts)
After what felt like the longest two-year wait ever, Remi Wolf is finally back. Following her sophomore album, Big Ideas, she has officially kicked off a new era with her recent single “Twiggy.”
Fans got their first taste of the song on July 24 when she surprised the crowd during Hayley Williams’ headlining set at Newport Folk Festival and now that it's finally here, it’s easy to see why everyone has been so excited.
The song opens with one of the most unmistakably Wolf lyrics imaginable:
“Twiggy little butt you got / Swinging back and forth in the parking lot.”
Only Wolf can open a song like that and make it instantly iconic. Her songwriting has always lived in these weird, hyper-specific little details, and “Twiggy” is packed with them. From driving backwards in a Lexus to heart-shaped birthmarks, Polaroids, Bud Lights and Nicorette gum from CVS. Her lyrics feel like snapshots from someone's camera roll, somehow both hilarious and deeply personal.
Musically, “Twiggy” is a fresh direction, pairing warm finger-picked guitars with subtle flashes of the glitchy, off-kilter pop production she's perfected over the years. It’s definitely more country-leaning than anything we’ve heard from her before, but it never loses the quirky DNA that makes a Remi Wolf song instantly recognizable.
As playful as the song is, though, there's a vulnerability running underneath it. The chorus starts with carefree road-trip imagery before quietly revealing a relationship that’s equal parts magnetic and destructive:
“Where you saw independence / I saw being reckless... Fighting with your exes / You just miss me / I just miss you / We just missed our exit.”
It’s some of Wolf’s sharpest songwriting yet. The song moves between funny observations and genuine heartbreak without ever feeling forced, capturing the confusing push-and-pull of loving someone who isn't good for you and maybe not being much better yourself.
In her newsletter, Wolf describes “Twiggy” as “being stuck in old patterns... and begrudgingly kinda loving the toxicity of my relationship to people, places, and things.” In typical Remi fashion, she also joked that it might just be about people who “lack both butts and emotional availability.”
Across Juno and Big Ideas, Wolf built one of the most distinctive sounds in pop, blending elastic melodies, conversational lyrics, surreal imagery, and fearless production. “Twiggy” keeps all of those signature qualities while feeling more emotionally exposed than ever. It’s funny, chaotic, catchy, messy and surprisingly heartbreaking all in under four minutes.
The music video, featuring Cole Preston of Wallows, only adds to the song’s offbeat charm, matching the playful energy that Wolf brings to everything she creates.
Wolf encourages fans to “Please crank ‘Twiggy’ in your car, scream it with your friends, or let it keep you company while you dance through the day.”
Safe to say, that’s exactly what I’ll be doing.
If "Twiggy" is any indication of what's coming next, the wait was absolutely worth it.
