Måneskin is coming to the forefront of rock

By Kaitlyn Wilkes

Italian Eurovision winners Måneskin’s newest single “HONEY (ARE U COMING?)” brings the group's signature rough, dirty and sensual tone into their latest venture. They stick to what made them popular: a fun, slightly raunchy, party-rockstar tone with crashing instrumentals and a gravely vocal performance from front man Damiano David.

Although David’s vocals demonstrate his ability to ensnare the attention of the listener with his gritty and accented lilt, the true star of this punchy barely three minute tune is the band, comprised of drummer Ethan Torchio, guitarist Thomas Raggi and not-so-secret weapon bassist Victoria de Angelis.

A filtered vocal introduction smashes into the first verse like a car crash. The double entendre titled song sees de Angelis leaning into a simple but ever present bass line that illustrates the dark and secretive atmosphere of the composition. Aggressive tones of David calling out “honey are you coming?” are juxtaposed with the melodic and — at the risk of sounding repetitive — honeyed croons of the pre-chorus and verses. The timely cymbals from Torchio keep the momentum moving, a fast-paced tempo with excess drum fills left on the cutting-room floor.

Måneskin has proved their worth in both Italian and English, they bring an edgy rock to a younger generation. With all the star power and stage presence seen in the glam rock stars of the 1980s, they make heavier rock music palatable to those who may not be familiar to the genre, expanding their audience through the air of danger they possess.
